It’s a double header this July

That’s right, we’re having 2 meetings this July.

The first, with Gill Cleeren at Telerik, is already fully booked, and we expect the second to be equally popular.

On July 23rd we’ll be joining the lovely folks at UI Centric, who will be talking about their design processes and how they’ve applied them to Windows Phone.

We’ll also be hearing from Glynn Jones, CEO of Scoopt. He’ll be talking about the lessons learnt when they ported their app to Windows Phone but also what they’ve learnt in forming a start up around an app.

If you wish to come, please register at http://wpug34.eventbrite.com/ OR http://www.meetup.com/wpuguk/events/126544572/
There is no need to register at both. Just one will do. We provide the option of registering with either as we know some people have strong preferences/opinions about the two sites.

Again spaces are limited so if you register but later find you are unable to attend please let us know so we can offer the space to someone else.

A special meeting at Telerik in July

In July we have a special meeting with Gill Cleeren at Telerik.

Spaces are limited so registration is important. We normally allow registration on both MeetUp and Eventbrite as that’s given people the flexibility they want.
We’re allowing registration by both methods again this time but the numbers for each are very limited.
Register at

Getting to 2 Kingdom Street

If you’re coming to our meeting on Monday then you may want some directions.
Here are Nokia’s instructions:

Its super easy to get to our building from Paddington Station. Just walk down platform 8 until you get to the end and follow signs to the Hammersmith & City line. Just before the Hammersmith & City tube barriers, there is an exit for Grand Union Canal. Walk up the stairs and you’ll see signs for Kingdom street. Turn left and just follow the signs for Kingdom Street. We are @ Two Kingdom Street past all the shops and eating places but before the Novotel hotel.

If you want to see it on a map then go to http://binged.it/16ke0H5

Get more downloads at our next meeting

Our next meeting is on May 20th and is being hosted by our friends at Nokia.

As part of the meeting we’ll be hosting a demo showcase. This is an opportunity to show off an app you’ve built.

Why might you want to participate?

The most popular app, as voted on the night, will be rewarded with promotion in the store.

What’s so great about that?
Just ask anyone who has had an app featured in the store. The exposure of an app in the store leads to more downloads.

You want more people downloading your app don’t you?!

But there’s more.
We normally have writers from some of the largest Windows Phone related sites in attendance. This could be a great opportunity to get your app in front of people keen to hear about exciting new apps that they can write about. Those articles also typically translate into a big spike in downloads too.

Why wouldn’t you want to take part and potentially get more exposure of and downloads for your app?

There’s just two criteria:

  1. Your app must not have been demoed at WPUG before
  2. Your app must include Window Phone 8 specific functionality

Typically we ask people to share a little about the lessons they learnt in the creation of the app they’re demoing. For this event we’re suspending that rule though. If you just want to show off your app that’s fine.

If you want to demo (one of) your app(s) then you need to register, either via eventbrite or meetup (there’s no need to register on both) and then drop me a line to say that you want to participate.

Of course if you want to come along and see what app others have created then please do. Just register so we know how many to expect. Thanks.

multiplay.io at our next meeting

On the 23rd we’ll be joined by Ashraf from multiplay.io.

To give us an idea of what we’ll be talking about and what we can expect form his talk we’ve asked him to tell us a bit about it.

We’ve been working between the intersection of HTML5 and native technologies developing a crossplatform 3D multiplayer games.

In this talk, we would like to go over the process of porting and publishing a multiplayer 3d iOS/Android game to support Windows Phone 8 and Direct3D. Explaining a lot of the teething issues we’ve had to deal with, including the wrapping OpenGL to support Direct3D, working between JavaScript, C# and C++ and the server interactions for multiplayer gaming support.

We will also invite you to participate in a live demo showing the of the creation of new 3d multiplayer games with our realtime games editor.

The talk will be aimed at beginners with the platform and no prior knowledge is assumed.

If you want to know more in advance, check out http://multiplay.io/ or http://blog.softwareispoetry.com/

If you’d like to come (it’s free) then please register at either eventbrite OR meetup.com. (Having an idea of how many people are coming helps us prepare appropriately-i.e. get enough beer in.)
